This documentary film is about the dance performance, of a Canadian dance team iDANCE Edmonton Integrated Dance. Most people think that only the people with perfectly nice figures can do the dance performances. However, there is a wonderful piece of performance which proves it as a prejudice.
When the performance starts, a scene we didnt expect shows up. The dancers with different body types in wheelchairs come up on the stage. Some of them cant walk, or stretch their arms and some do not have any legs.
But surprisingly, they dance in the most beautiful way a human body can express. The audiences start to ask fundamental questions to themselves of what our bodies really mean and what dance is, as they watch the performance. Being moved to tears, there comes a time for self-reflection.
Postmodern dance , a touching performance.
A dance method that was mainly used in is called Contact Improvisation. This method was developed by Steve Paxton in the United States and is a main method of postmodern dance. It is about enjoying the spontaneous motions that are made from physical contact with different persons bodies. One of the characteristics of postmodern dance is that it liberates dancing from the boundary of professional dancers and opens the door for ordinary people.
Contact Improvisation is freely used widely from people with disability to professionals in various ways. In this context, is an example of postmodern dance. The film was all the more special for me because Ive worked with a dancer with disability when I was a choreographer of a ballet piece .
People who have prejudice may regard them as a disabled dance team, but the dance team do not add the word disabled to describe themselves. They throw some fundamental questions to us of what being disabled is, and what is not. Can we say disabled people just because they are with disability? Who made the standard of being disabled?
Everyone has problems regarding money, family, love, business, or other issues. Not having a perfectly comfortable body is just one of these kinds of problems. We do not name a person with non-physical problem as the disabled, but we name people who has physical problem as the disabled. The binary criteria that separates the non-disabled and the disabled acts as a suppression to many people. In addition, every human has strength of life, and with that power, they can easily overcome the disability of body.
Body is a field where we learn about life and love
What is body? The founder of the field of Somatics, Hanna, T. (2003~04) emphasized that life came to the world in a shape of body. Body is a shape of life that human acknowledge for the first time. Life is not an abstract thing, but exists as a living body. Humans feel, see, touch, think, talk and experience through body. Body is an existence in itself.
However, the body reveals each individual in various forms. The diversity is only a difference and should never become a discrimination. As Nietzsche emphasized, the body is not only a main agent, but also the body itself is the human being. In addition, the body, as a living organism perpetually moves without resting for a moment. If the body moves, we live, and if it stops, we perish. Knowing the human body means knowing life, death and love. The potential to change the world also lies in the human body.
The moment one gains insight to the human body, one starts to feel sympathy towards the pitiable, and becomes Buddha(佛像), turning into an axis that will change the world. In this way, shows that understanding the human body is the key to understanding human life, and that the human body itself is love and life. This is true. The human body is the scene where you truly get to know life and love. Here, centered on my body, everything converges.
Performing dance in their own way: there is no disability.
What is dance? Any movement of the human body can become a dance. Being able to dance is the evidence of life and the greatest blessing. The organism moves in its own way, but at the same time, interacts with its surroundings. A dance is completed by several bodies interacting together. The dancers of iDANCE raise questions regarding the conventional normative standards and dancing that complies with them.
They do not learn and follow the original movements but pursue to express and reveal something from their inner side in their own way. They show how they gain strength to overcome hardships by dancing in their own way. This can be a big help as it can be directly applied to our everyday life. Everyone has their own way to overcome difficulties and we cannot judge what is right or wrong, as they are just different.
For the members of iDANCE, the "inconvenience" in their body is not a disability but rather an agent that expands the definition and the domain of dance. Since when did dance, that have existed from the beginning of humankind, have become tall and pretty dancers following the movements of their scary teachers? Since when did dance started  to be limited on stages that can only be performed by professional dancers? As you will see, the members of iDANCE creates dance from the movements that comes out naturally.
A dance that is danced naturally without trying to dance "well" is the kind of dance that possess authenticity and creates sensation. As it is shown before the audiences eyes, they acknowledge the truth that an inspired dance is possible only by dumping ones own desires. The characters in liberates dance by maximizing the power of life, and vividly shows that dance is derived from the body and not the brain.
Human beings constantly evolve. And the ultimate goal of evolution is beauty. If so, what is true beauty? All human beings live with pain and solitude. Then true beauty must be reaching a state of true serenity with silence and modesty by overcoming this severe pain and solitude. In , a dancer who does not have a spine and is suffering from arthritis claims that she is happy. In this scene, one cannot help but shed a tear. Is this not true beauty?
